camt.053 vs camt.054: What Bank Statement XML Files Actually Contain

Most of the SEPA/ISO 20022 content on this site covers the outbound direction: turning a spreadsheet into a payment instruction file (pain.001) or a direct debit collection (pain.008). camt.053 and camt.054 go the other way — they're what your bank sends you, describing what already happened on your account.

camt.053: the full statement

camt.053 (Bank-to-Customer Statement) is the ISO 20022 replacement for the legacy MT940 statement format. It's a periodic report — typically daily — covering every transaction on an account, plus opening and closing balances. If you need to reconcile a full day or month of activity against your books, camt.053 is the format with enough context to do that on its own.

camt.054: the lighter notification

camt.054 (Bank-to-Customer Debit/Credit Notification) reports specific entries — for example, an incoming SEPA Credit Transfer landing in your account — without the opening/closing balance context a full statement carries. Banks typically send camt.054 for real-time or intraday notifications, and camt.053 for the end-of-day or periodic statement.

Why you'd convert either one to Excel

XML is built for machine-to-machine transfer, not for a finance team scanning a day's transactions. Converting camt.053 or camt.054 to Excel or CSV lets you:

• Reconcile against open invoices using ordinary spreadsheet filtering and search, instead of reading raw XML.
• Produce audit and tax reports without specialized treasury software.
• Feed accounting software that doesn't speak camt yet — plenty of tools still expect a flat file or CSV import.
