What is a SEPA Creditor Identifier (Gläubiger-ID) and How to Get One
If you've ever tried to set up SEPA Direct Debit collections and hit a field asking for a "Creditor Identifier" with no explanation of what it is or where to get one, you're not alone. It's one of the most common points of confusion for businesses, associations, and clubs collecting recurring payments in Europe for the first time.
What is a Creditor Identifier?
A Creditor Identifier (CI), known in Germany as the Gläubiger-ID, is a unique reference number that identifies your organization as authorized to collect SEPA Direct Debit payments. Unlike an IBAN, which identifies a bank account, the Creditor Identifier identifies you — the entity issuing the collection — and appears in every pain.008 file you generate. Banks use it to verify that a collection request is coming from a legitimate, registered creditor.
You only need to apply for it once. It doesn't expire and stays the same across all your future SEPA Direct Debit collections, regardless of which bank account you use.
Breaking Down the Format
A Creditor Identifier always follows the same fixed structure. Here's the example format our converter uses, broken into its four parts:
DE98ZZZ09999999999 └┬┘└┬┘└┬┘└────┬────┘ │ │ │ └─ National Identifier (your business registration ID) │ │ └──────── Creditor Business Code (usually "ZZZ" if not applicable) │ └─────────── Check Digits (validate the rest of the code) └────────────── Country Code (ISO country, e.g. DE for Germany)
- Country code (2 characters): the ISO country code of the issuing country, e.g.
DEfor Germany. - Check digits (2 digits): a checksum calculated from the rest of the identifier, used to catch typos automatically.
- Creditor business code (3 characters): an optional internal classification code; most organizations simply use
ZZZ. - National identifier (up to 28 characters): a country-specific identifier tied to your organization, assigned when you apply.
How to Apply for One in Germany
In Germany, the Creditor Identifier is issued by the Deutsche Bundesbank. The application is free and typically processed within a few business days. You can submit your request directly on the Bundesbank website:

Once issued, your Creditor Identifier stays valid indefinitely — there's no need to reapply for future collection runs, new bank accounts, or additional mandates.
How Our Tool Validates Your Creditor ID
Because a single wrong character in your Creditor Identifier causes an entire pain.008 batch to be rejected by the bank, our SEPA Direct Debit generator checks the format for you before you download anything. When you enter a Creditor Identifier, we show you the same country / check digits / business code / national identifier breakdown above, so you can immediately see which part looks wrong — and if you don't have one yet, we link straight to the Bundesbank application page.
